Because of the title, I thought this was a prequel to the Tiffany Aching series. Imagine my surprise when I found it was a paperback edition of The Wee Free Men and Hatful of Sky. I love both of these books, but must admit I don’t need additional copies. Just thought others may want to know.

Like some others who have posted reviews here, I was so delighted to see what appeared to be a prequel to 2 books I had enjoyed that I bought it without reading any details. Both books combined in this re-published volume (The Wee Free Men and A Hat Full of Sky) are excellent for middle school kids right on through adults who enjoy Terry Pratchett. But this was deceptive, whether intentionally or not. I accept a large part of the responsibility for not reading all of the descriptive material, of course. But it certainly sounded like a prequel to me, and I am obviously not the only one.

This is simply a re-issue of Wee Free Men and A Hat Full of Sky combined into one low quality paperback. No new material at all.

    WARNING…WARNING….WARNING…..

Although this book was very deceptively posted as if it was a new BOOK that was going to give some backstory and “prequel” type material it is actually just a marketing trick. This NEW BOOK…Wee Free Men The beginnings is only a reissue in one volume of the first two books of the Tiffany Acking story arch. I am very disappointed in how this was marketed.

Pratchett is one of the greatest, sharpest, most entertaining and enlightening writers of all time. His Discworld series has provided me more entertainment (and often thought provoking entertainment at that) than just about any thing else I can think of. While my personal favorites are the Discworld books that follow the city watch and Commander Sam Vimes (one of my all time favorite characters in any media), every book in the series is worth reading. Starting with book four, Mort, all the way to book 33 or so Unseen Academicals, Pratchett has established himself as a brilliant world builder, character creator, satarist, and humorist. While several of his books would make my top ten of all time list, Nightwatch could very easily take the very top spot.

The two books covered in this volume are the first two Tiffany Aching books (as with many of the Discworld books, these books are set in the Discworld, but form the start of thier own series within the series). Written to a slightly younger audience, they are still highly enjoyable for all ages. Highly recommended in and of themselves, combined in a nice volume for such a low price, they are absolutely worth picking up for any Discworld fans or for anyone who hasn’t yet given the Discworld (and Pratchett) a try.
